We’ve grown from a small office to serving major global brands. In 2021, we expanded with Cartmell Communications Limited, in Ireland. We started our journey back in 2002 in the bustling city of Johannesburg, South Africa. Our founder, Kevin Cartmell, brought with him 15 years of rich experience in magazine publishing, working with big names like PC Magazine, Wired, and Windows User Magazine.

With a deep understanding of the retail and commercial publishing industries, Kevin decided to embrace the digital revolution, and thus, our digital studio was born.

Our Growth Journey

What began as a small office has flourished into a thriving company, thanks to the power of the internet and the adoption of Mambo CMS, the first real CMS framework. Our innovative web development services quickly caught the eye of major brands such as Sotheby’s Int’l Realty, Bidvest – Hotel Amenities, JCDecaux Africa, Goscor Group, Tempest Car Hire, and Compass Group South Africa. Our goal has always been to create high-end, sustainable solutions that not only redefine communication strategies but also make a real impact on our clients’ bottom lines.

Adapting to the Digital Landscape

As the digital landscape evolved with new CMS frameworks like Joomla, Drupal, Magento, and WordPress, we adapted swiftly. We started offering managed hosting services, which allowed us to develop and host our clients’ websites and manage their email infrastructure. Our services expanded rapidly into SEO and Social Media, providing a full suite of digital solutions.

Expertise and Security

Our expertise in PHP coding, structural design, and security hardening has made us a go-to for many hosting companies. We specialise in fixing hacked or malfunctioning websites and implementing robust security and backup solutions to keep our clients’ online presence safe and secure.

Expanding into Europe with Cartmell Communications Limited

In 2021, we took a big leap by opening Cartmell Communications Limited, our satellite office in Ireland. This was more than just a business move—it was an opportunity to take on new challenges and see what another continent has to offer. After being in business since 2001, we felt it was time to expand our horizons and bring our services closer to our European clients.

One of the key reasons behind this decision was the growing challenge of dealing with fluctuating exchange rates, especially when buying dollar-based software from South Africa. It’s no secret that these rates have been tough on many businesses like ours. By establishing a presence in Europe, we’re in a better position to manage these financial pressures and continue offering cost-effective solutions to our clients.

But this expansion isn’t just about navigating economic hurdles—it’s also about growth, both for our business and for us as a team. Ireland, with its dynamic business environment and easy access to the wider European market, felt like the perfect place to plant new roots. It’s given us a chance to reach more people with the same dedication and quality that’s been our focus since day one.
